MLB posts another strong attendance weekend
Major League Baseball drew 1,626,347 fans for this past weekend's 45 games, marking the second consecutive weekend that the Clubs combined to draw in excess of 1.625 million for the Friday-Sunday games following the 1,646,000 fans that attended games on June 17th-19th. It is the first time since July 11th-13th (1,707,975) and July 18th-20th (1,668,015) of 2008 that Major League Baseball has exceeded 1.625 million on consecutive weekends.
In addition, through 168 games of Interleague Play, Major League Baseball is currently averaging 34,118 fans per game. The current interleague average is 20.3 percent higher than this season's current intraleague average of 28,372.
Attendance highlights among the Clubs this past weekend included :
On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Pirates drew 39,483 fans, the largest crowd ever to see a baseball game in the 10-year history of PNC Park. The mark was broken again on Sunday when the Pirates had a crowd of 39,511. The three-date series total was a PNC Park-record 118,324. The Philadelphia Phillies series against the Oakland Athletics was the highest attended three-game series in Citizens Bank Park history (137,333). It contained the second (45,863), fourth (45,785) and 14th (45,685) largest regular season crowds in park history The Kansas City Royals drew 100,066 for their three-game series vs. the Chicago Cubs, which was the highest total at Kauffman Stadium in 2011. It was their most-attended three-game series since June 25-27, 2010 vs. St. Louis (110,311). The Texas Rangers drew 46,092 fans against the New York Mets on Friday night. It was their 13th crowd of over 45,000 this year. Last season, the Rangers had a total of 15 such games for the entire season. MLB Advanced Media, L.P. Thousands of fans attended the start of the College World Series last week at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb, and they formed opinions about the first series not held at Rosenblatt Stadium in 61 years.</p><p>The consensus was that the new park isn’t Rosenblatt. But many shared admiration for the change of scenery.</p><p>“After working a couple of games, (TD Ameritrade Park) is really starting to grow on me,” said <strong>Adam Backora</strong>, a fan-favorite vendor who goes by “The Candyman” and began working at Rosenblatt at age 12. “The bleachers aren’t as rowdy as they once were at Rosenblatt. They used to get really rowdy, pound on the stairs and make loud noises, but they’re still awesome out in the outfield.” </p><p>Backora wasn’t the only one still fond of series past. But some fans who attended College World Series games for more than two decades showed a shared appreciation for both stadiums after experiencing TD Ameritrade Park, which holds 24,000 fans. </p><p> “It’s beautiful,” said <strong>Dan Fry</strong>, an Omaha native. “I was kind of the old Rosenblatt fan and I hated to see it go. But to keep the series here for the next 25 years, they had to do something like this. ... I haven’t heard a bad comment. The biggest thing was maybe the parking.”</p><p>As fans found themselves nearing the stadium, they began the search for the closest — and cheapest — parking location. A majority of parking lots found within a few blocks from the stadium ranged from $10 to $35. The closest parking was located within a block of the stadium and reserved for folks with permits. General parking was found two to three blocks away.</p><p>“We wish the tailgating was a little closer to the stadium to make it more fan-friendly,” said <strong>Kerry Cox</strong> of Austin, Texas. “Other than that it’s great.” </p><p>In the past, fans passed tailgaters and tents filled with merchandise, apparel, food and drinks located conveniently in front of Rosenblatt. While fans can still find shopping and entertainment near TD Ameritrade Park, they may have to take time to walk through the surrounding city blocks to locate their favorite venues.</p><p>Once into the stadium, fans noticed similarities to Kauffman Stadium in the forms of a wide concourse, the overhanging upper deck and outfield vendors. This is perhaps because Populous, the group that designed TD Ameritrade, is based in Kansas City. </p><p>“I’ve heard this more than once is ‘I love the stadium, but it’s not Rosenblatt,’” Backora said. “… Ten years from now people won’t even say that anymore.
