Canoeists Rescued On Little Miami River

CINCINNATI -- A deluge of rain caused flooding across the Tri-State and led to several rescues.

Officials said the storm came in so quickly Tuesday that roads and communities that never used to flood were under water.

The Hamilton County Water Rescue Team rescued nine canoeists, including a pregnant woman, from the Little Miami River near the Terrace Park Country Club.

Milford firefighters said six canoes overturned, throwing everyone in the water. Some of the canoeists were stuck on an island, while others were stranded on a golf course.

"The water started rising, and the storm came in. We couldn't get out of the water fast enough," rescued canoeist Linda Blair said.

The canoeists said they had difficulty getting to shore because of the fast-moving water.

Firefighters from Anderson Township used ladders to reach some of the canoeists.

Officials said one man was trapped in flood waters in Union Township.

"There was a jeep stuck in the middle of the road. The water got up to about four feet across it. We managed to put a rope around it and pull it out," resident Shawn Tracy said.

The deluge also caused flash flooding along roadways across the Tri-State. On Harrison Avenue in Green Township, an entire lane of traffic was covered with water.

"I'm trying to get home. I've been trying since 6 p.m.," stranded resident Stan Haude said.

Haude said he was still able to get through New England Club Drive to buy dinner for his family, but the private road soon became impassable.

Officials said they are scurrying to find a fix because they are concerned for the nursing home and retirement villa trapped on the other side.

"We make an average of four to six calls back here (at the nursing home) every day. Right now, we have no way of getting to them because of this water going across this roadway," Anderson Township Fire Department Chief Paul Cunningham said.

Cunningham said engineers are working to make sure the weight of an ambulance can safely pass on the damaged roadway.

"It (the road) could potentially be washed out underneath. It could be a sinkhole," Cunningham said.

At least one car stalled in water on Columbia Parkway. While the road was not closed, it was difficult for a time Tuesday afternoon for cars to pass.

I forgot my shorts so I had to roll up my blue jeans, I love casual Fridays, and grabbed my wading boots and Lady L's fly rod. I had her fly rod because I wanted to get the stink off of it and catch some fish with it. It was a custom build that I gave to her for her last birthday. It's a sweet rod in that it has a few extra guides on it. If you ever build a rod, put extra guides on it. It will help in casting. More on this later. I left the river at about 6 o'clock because I was hungry and wanted to get home. On my way out, a baseball game had started and I watched a little of it while my feet dried out. The poor kid on the mound was getting absolutely murdered. He was getting shelled, his outfield wasn't giving him any help and the base runners were stealing like crazy. Not to mention there was a beautiful throw to  home plate and the catcher bobbled it. I felt horrible for the kid. Hi, welcome to my blog.
