MLS Week in Review: Very Tough Week For The League On And Off The Field
In what has been a pretty good year for Major League Soccer, it wasn’t exactly their finest hour this week. How bad was it? Here’s a list of some of the things that went wrong:
After fans in the supporters section in New England were ejected – seemingly without much warning and without much tact – last week, similar incidents occurred in Columbus and Dallas, meaning that in three of its original markets (and MLS is struggling to keep a foothold in all three) they’ve created tension among their most loyal fans. And while the New England thing might have seemed like an isolated incident from an out-of-touch ownership, now it seems like a league-wide mandate. What public relations firm is MLS consulting with that move? Even though the US and Mexico were heavy favorites for a long time to meet in Saturday night’s Gold Cup final, four MLS games were played – at least in part – during it. I’ve been on the record stating that I believed that MLS had no choice but to play through the Gold Cup, but with all afternoon Saturday and all day Sunday to schedule games, that is an insanely dumb thing to do. I can’t find a way to justify it. The league fined Charlie Davies $1,000 for “bringing the game into disrepute” by diving last week against Real Salt Lake. However, Terry Vaughn, who the league is now admitting incorrectly gave Davies the penalty that tied the game, was back in the middle four days later with no consequences. The Pandora’s Box now open, it took only 40 minutes of the game after the fine was announced for Houston’s Brian Ching to go down untouched (by an opponent at least), and an MLS ref being duped again. Of course, the Soviet – I mean, MLS – report said this:“Brian Ching received the ball in the DC box and goalkeeper Bill Hamid dove in, reaching for the ball. Ching eluded Hamid, and his left foot caught the Dynamo striker. Referee Mark Kadlecik pointed to the spot, and Brad Davis stepped up and converted the penalty to tie the game in the 41st minute.”
Ching should be fined $1,000 and if you want to take it a step further, shouldn’t the results of those games be changed if the MLS really wants to eradicate “disrepute”? Ah, the Pandora’s Box is open now.
