Teens needed to serve as live art at 10th annual Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival July 16 and 17, 2011 held in the Buffalo Grove Town Center, at the intersection of McHenry Road (Route 83) and Lake Cook Road. Performers must be 15 years old and over; volunteer to pose for two hours in an assigned location striking poses for about 10 seconds. Poses are to be artistic, G-rated and safe. Teens may pose as solos or as duets. Teens must have a release from a parent/guardian to participate. Performers furnish their own costume and makeup. Performers are judged on best costume, most creative costume, best make-up, best posing. Winners receive “Art Bucks” good for the purchase of art and jewelry at the festival. Nick answers:I make my own bath salts. It’s actually very simple. All you need are Epsom salts, sea salt, baking soda and an essential oil with the scent you want. My personal favorites are orange, lavender and peppermint. If you want them to be colored you can also add a couple of drops of food coloring. Here’s what you do. This makes a large batch, so you could adjust the amounts to make a smaller batch.
3 cups Epsom salts (you can purchase this at the pharmacy) 1 cup sea salt
Mix the salts and baking soda with your hands or a spoon or you can toss everything together in a large freezer baggy. Add two or three drops of food coloring for pastel shading and mix well. It will want to clump together with the salts and baking soda. Once that is done add about five drops of essential oil to your salts. Here again, mix very well.
You can lay the salts onto a large plate or jelly roll pan and let it dry overnight. I find that keeps the oils from causing large, hard clumps in the finished product. Then you can store the bath salts in an airtight container in a place with low humidity.
If you want to get really creative you could even add dried herbs or flower petals to the salts. The best thing about home made bath salts is that they are affordable and fun to make. If you want salts for a specific purpose (such as relaxation, invigoration or to soak sore muscles) go online and research aromatherapy to help you select various essential oils. Some are more expensive than others, but most of the more commonly used scents are very affordable.
