In this heat, poor hydration habits just don't hold water
If we lose more water than we take into our body, we will suffer the consequences of dehydration, which include: dry mouth, reduction in urine, dark-colored urine, fatigue, sleepiness, extreme thirst, headache, confusion, lightheadedness and fuzzy thinking.
Unfortunately, as people age, they do not feel thirst as younger people may. They may just start to feel fuzzy-headed, lightheaded, tired, even confused. It is a good idea for people to ingest water on a regular basis. This is particularly true in the semitropical climate of Florida.
As a rule out thumb, you can determine if you are drinking enough water by your frequency and amount of urination. Someone who is urinating approximately every two to three hours during the day probably is getting enough water.
There is no substitute for water. Some fluids such as alcohol can lead to dehydration. Carbonated beverages are not as good as water for hydration.
Sports drinks do have a role in hydration, something most athletes know.
However, for the elderly on multiple medications, sports drinks can actually lead to significant medical consequences.
Sports drinks contain an element called potassium. For people, especially the elderly, taking certain kind of medications or suffering from kidney disease, potassium can accumulate and cause catastrophic health problems.
The best hydrating fluid is water. It is important for everyone to drink the proper amount of water daily.
