Cross: A busy summer in downtown Elizabeth City

There are so many wonderful things happening Downtown Elizabeth City this Summer — movies, music, camps, art, food, shopping and more, and we want you to be sure to come and enjoy them!

Here are some fun activities coming up. There is something for the whole family downtown!

Tuesday, June 7 is the 2011 Mariners’ Wharf Film Festival Grand Opening! Relive the drive-in movie experience — sans the car — with Elizabeth City’s beautiful waterfront at Mariners’ Wharf as the backdrop. Classic American films are shown on a large screen on eight consecutive Tuesdays at 8:30 p.m. from June 7 to July 26. There is no admission and all screenings are free to the public. We have a great line-up of classics to show including a Western. For a complete listing of movies please visit www.marinerswharffilmfestival.com . Should a screening be canceled due to inclement weather, it will be rescheduled at a later date. New dates will be announced at the festival and also on Twitter and Facebook. New family friendly movie night “Kids’ Flix” will be held at Mariners’ Wharf Park on June 24, July 29and Aug. 26 at 8:30 p.m. Movies are for ages toddler and up. Bring your lawn chairs, towels, and blankets and enjoy fun on the lawn!

Beginning Tuesday, July 26, we are also kicking off the 2011 Music On The Green at Mariners’ Wharf Park summer music series. Local and regional bands will perform concerts free to the public on the beautiful downtown Elizabeth City waterfront every Tuesday evening from July 26 through Sept. 20 from 6-8 p.m. This year’s event is the third annual Music on the Green, and attendance continues to grow each year. Harbor Nights are back on First Friday Nights of each Summer month (June—September), 6-9 p.m. in Mariners’ Wharf Park. Great entertainment, bounce house, and food by Bob-B-Q. Friday, July 1 “Warm Up for the Fourth” with Blues and Mojo by Uphill; Aug. 5 “USO Coast Guard Harbor Night” with a special musical treat from the USO; Sept. 2 “Summer Send Off” with Out ‘N The Cold. First Friday Art Walk Continues the First Friday of every month from 5:30-7:30 p.m. with many downtown studios, galleries, businesses and restaurants open featuring talented artists and food and wine. Drop your kids off for a great time at Serenity Studio Arts or Port Discover and walk to our many wonderful open businesses.

Bamboo Roman Shades — Suggestions for window coverings in kids' rooms?

I have white curtains and a lot of light comes through … your kids are probably up early anyway but for napping or sick/sleepy days and such, it may keep them from resting easier. i love your idea for thermal roman shades. they’re too pricey for me right now, but i would love to have them. only idea i can think of is curtain rod with a dark thick curtain. if you’re worried about them pulling on it you could set it over the rod during the day until you trust them around the curtains?
