The Best Job a Guy Can Have
One for the dads:
What did you want to be when you grew up (assuming you have)? What was your dream job?
Was it Dad?
Probably not. Most of us who grew up in the '70s wanted to be Lee Majors from the "Six Million Dollar Man"—or at least we wanted to be married to Farrah Fawcett. Seriously, what 10-year-old red-blooded American boy circa 1976 didn’t want to run as fast as a train, lift a custom van filled with long-haired hippie crooks right off the street (with a cool a NYA NYA NYA soundtrack in the background) and get to kiss that chick from the poster any time he wanted? I know I did. Still have that poster.
I also went through a phase when I wanted to be Walt Disney. He was the coolest old guy I’d ever seen. I watched him every Sunday night on "Wonderful World of Disney." (Six p.m., ABC, and only if you finish all your pasta.)
He’d be joking around with Mickey Mouse (Mickey was his friend! How cool is that?!) during the introduction and sometimes he broadcast from behind the scenes on one of the rides, like the library in the Haunted Mansion or the plundered village in Pirates of the Caribbean. He never had to grow up, he got to be a kid forever. Come to think of it, I still want to be him—you know, if he weren’t dead and all.
But did you ever dream of being Dad?
Why would you? Dads were old, dads wore socks with sandals. Dads had to go to this horrible place called work ). I vowed at an early age never to hate work as much as my dad did—he made sure of it. It was the greatest lesson he ever taught me.
So I studied hard (sorta—rugby party hangovers and a girlfriend who unceremoniously dumped me, took a toll on my GPA sophomore year) and I graduated with one degree I can use and one I never will and, unlike my Dad, settled into my career, being what I wanted to be.
You know something? It pales in comparison with being Dad.
Dad is the best title a guy can have. Being Dad is way more fun than being CEO or CPA or that guy who does all the dirty jobs for a day and has his own show on cable. Unless he’s a dad, in which case he gets to be on TV, goof off doing someone else’s miserable job, and go home and be Dad, which is pretty cool.
Dad is the good cop. Mom does all the yelling and in the aftermath Dad provides all the comfort and hugs, then Mom gets mad at Dad for not backing her up and Dad and kids skulk downstairs to play Wii Star Wars and escape Mom’s wrath. Dads can get away with that kind of thing; we can’t be fired or replaced, outsourced or put on notice.

The Disney Plan: 344...One More Point About Character Meet and Greets
" Imagine yourself as a guest, bringing your family to vist Walt Disney World. You walk down Main Street, pass through Cinderella Castle, and suddenly you come upon a Disney character at a table, chatting with a supervisor over a cup of coffee and a cigarette. Doesn't sound like Disney, does it? And if you were that guest, you wouldn't be very happy with our show, would you? Remember that regardless of where you work or what your role is, anytime you are in a public area, you are 'onstage.' Your attitude and performance are direct reflections on the quality of our Walt Disney World show. " different locations within a park and you will never see a character half dressed. I was watching the afternoon parade in the Magic Kingdom once and one of the broomsticks from the Sorcerer's Apprentice fell down. Cast members came and helped him up and it was obvious that the poor little broomstick had overheated and was not feeling well. In fact at one point you could see him trying to take the top part of his costume off but the cast members around him would not let him do it until they got past the gate at the end of Main St, well out of sight from us, the viewers. Disney does a great job creating magical moments but you also have a role to play. As you and your kids meet the characters please interact with them as if they were the real thing! Now is not the time to ask them how hot it is in there? Don't ask them what their costume is made of or what time they get off. That is the one and only Mickey Mouse (or Peter Pan, or Cinderella) you are talking to. One of my favorite character meets we had as a family was with Mr. Smee and Captain Hook. At the time my three-year-old daughter loved Captain Hook. He was her favorite character in Peter Pan. When I told that to Captain Hook he played it up so much with my daughter, it was great!
