Torrance Daily Breeze: "Are state salaries too good for government?"
Figures released by the state controller last week show that California state government pays more than 1,400 workers in excess of $200,000 a year, and that the highest paid work is done for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation _ much of it by prison doctors, dentists or nurses.
Last year, one prison doctor was paid $777,423; a dentist received $599,403.
A former psychiatrist at the California Institution for Women was paid $469,259 in 2010, the 13th-highest salary on the list.
Californians' confidence in their government is eroding. Both major political parties seem more interested in protecting narrow interest groups that offer members key financial support _ labor unions for the Democrats, anti-tax groups for the Republicans _ than in working for the good of Californians as a whole. Hundreds of city councils throughout the state over the past two decades completely caved to the outrageous pension demands of public employee groups during good economic times. With the bad times not yet behind us, the cost of paying too much money in both current salaries and future pensions is pushing many government entities to the brink.
Is California literally insolvent? Not by any means. Are its municipalities? One has gone bankrupt; a handful are teetering. Most will be fine. The point here is that perception is key. Government entities should not have the concept of insolvency mentioned in the same sentence with them. It's bad for business _ the people's business.
So why do we pay at least 1,400 state employees who make over $200,000 a year for what is, after all, government work, more than we should? Even given the by-definition rough duty that is prisoners' teeth, is it really rough to the tune of 600 grand?
It will take time to sort out the incomplete data released by state Controller John Chiang. But a look at annual salary ranges for the position shows the dentist was mostly paid in bonuses or payouts of unused vacation and sick hours.
We can't undo the overpayments already made. We can insist that responsible California lawmakers work to put an immediate cap on sick-pay hours, on vacation hours, on the entirely bogus "personal leave" hours many public employees earn, rarely use and still cash in. In most of the private sector, it's use it or lose it.
In order for us to maintain our confidence in government, we need to see real compensation reform, and see it now.
