A warm front on a cold day
Popularity, I knew you yesterday. I was at an outside English country wedding, well prepared, with a bag full of tights and cardigans and blankets for the cold. I even had some spare ballet flats, for we were on the side of a hill and already quite a few of the female guests were stuck like tent pegs in the topsoil. (They accepted it bravely, swaying slightly with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other.)
The bride covered her frothy Parisian lace gown with a white mink coat, ecstatic and cosy, but everyone else wanted to be my friend suddenly.
It was a strange feeling doling out knitwear to people I didn’t know. The word went round fast for the wind was up. The sky was a brilliant blue on one side and almost black on the other. You could see a thunderstorm in the distance and needles of rain heading our way.
The vicar’s wife, teeth chattering, perched my pink capelet on her shoulders with a gratitude that was almost holy. A small child took a pale pink hoody belonging to my daughter and gave me a kiss on the knee. A couple of forlorn women disappeared with packets of tights behind bushes and came back, sparkling banter flying between them, their blue legs glossy and black. A young woman who’s going out with a cousin of my husband’s slipped on a grey jersey and told me she hoped to marry her beau ASAP. “Like that will ever happen,” she sighed.
“I’ll have a word,” I promised wildly.
I felt like our school matron: prepared for all eventualities with a broad smile and indulgent catchphrases such as: “Not to worry, dear, it’s just that bug that’s going around.” Or Juliet’s nurse. Or a backstage dresser at the London Palladium. Or the world’s best grandma. I do so long for old age.
The setting, I must add, was breathtakingly beautiful: sheaves of lavender, flocks of old pink roses everywhere, willow trees brimming with emotion, waiters as happy to bring you a cup of tea as a glass of pink champagne, which is unusual.
There were little children in abundance, their hair threaded with rosebuds, weaving in and out of people’s legs. And the dresses! The bosoms! And, even more than that, the shoes! Yellow suede with silver platforms and seven-inch spikes; traffic-stopping fluorescent orange patent, with towering stacked oak heels.
The atmosphere was my personal favourite: lavish yet informal. And all around the happiness of the couple, who have known sad times, shimmering above the proceedings like a kind of dew.
