LA Favorites- Gjelina - Alterna

Alterna was founded in Beverly Hills, CA and the SoCal lifestyle is part of our DNA. This city has so much to offer that we want to share our favorite LA hotspots here on this blog with our Alterna friends. We hope you get to experience each one of them!

First up: Gjelina Restaurant in Venice, CA.

This Abbott Kinney gem is not only the hottest restaurant in LA but I think it’s the tastiest. The entire experience is extremely “LA”- from the uber-trendy, John Varvatos-clad servers who definitely took their style cues from Heath Ledger, to the artsy/scruffy/distinguished/famous customers and let’s not forget the fact that getting a table is virtually impossible (unless you are that artsy/scruffy/distinguished/famous person or are ok with waiting for hours). The restaurant itself is eclectic and super cool with its chandeliers and hanging lightbulbs and communal tables with vintage stools. There is a fabulous back patio as well.

Now let’s talk food. The menu is interesting and plates are meant to be shared. The vegetable dishes are delectable enough to make vegetarianism a viable option for anyone. The fire-roasted cauliflower, kale with hazelnuts, carrots & peas and braised artichokes taste like they were picked from the backyard (and they most likely were- all the ingredients come from the local LA farmer’s market). The mushroom toast might be my favorite item on the menu with its rich creme fraiche and truffle oil. The pizzas are heavenly- the Guanciale and green olive being my favorite. Try the skirt steak and whatever you do, make sure to finish with the butterscotch pot de creme with salted caramel.

Gjelina is a celebrity hotspot- we ate next to Mayor Villaraigosa and Maria Bello a few days ago. My dining companions saw Eva Mendes and Leo DiCaprio weeks before. RUN, don’t walk to Gjelina. It’s that good.
