Mercer takes perfect trip to Victory Lane

FRASERVILLE -- Every driver dreams about steering the perfect race car.

A machine that'll run to the front of the pack, do everything that's asked of it and go anywhere on the track.

On Friday, June 17, Port Hope's Bryan Mercer's dream came true. His #81 Sine's Flooring Chevrolet was perfect, earning the 37 year-old father of three a win in Kawartha Speedway's 100 lap NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Model main event.

Mercer couldn't believe the way the car ran and how it responded to every challenge asked of it.

"I was the guy sitting behind the wheel, but this car was amazing tonight," Mercer said in Victory Lane. "It worked on the top or bottom of the track. The crew put in some long hours at the shop to make sure we were ready and it really paid off. This is the moment I've been waiting for for about the last three years."

Mercer said his night started off great as the car needed very few changes during Kawartha's pre-race practice sessions. Things om there, with a win in the night's second late model qualifying event. The driver was thrilled with the way his machine performed throughout the extra-distance event, but admits he was a little concerned about what might happen during the race's later stages.

"I always try to maintain a positive attitude, but whenever you're running well, you can't help but be worried about little things that can go wrong," Mercer admitted. "I think we developed a bit of a fuel pickup problem during the yellow flags. It took a bit of time for me to get my rhythm and for the car to show its legs once we came back under the green flag. I had to fight with the #71 (Dan McHattie) to get the lead on the backstretch and the #20 (Dwight Brown) battled us hard on a late restart. I was lucky to be able to maintain the top spot against a couple of very strong runners. That makes the win even more special."

In his victory lane interview, after giving credit his wife and sons for their understanding, Mercer -- whose team earned Kawartha Speedway's dedicated pit crew award in 2007 -- took time to thank his crew, mentioning each member by name, for their hard work in the shop and at the track during the year. He also dedicated the win to long-time friend, supporter and sponsor Jim Sine who passed away in December of 2010.

"I was talking to Jim for about the last 10 laps of the race," Mercer said. "It would've been great to have him here for our win, but his wife Pat saw it and I'm sure she'll tell him.
