Sevier man gets jail time for parole violations
SEVIERVILLE - A politically connected Sevier County man is slated to report to jail today for violating his probation stemming from a 2009 vehicular homicide conviction.
Wesley G. Teaster, the 24-year-old grandson of longtime Pigeon Forge City Manager Earlene Teaster, was sentenced to 90 days in jail Monday after a judge determined he failed to report an Aug. 27 motor vehicle crash among other violations, including admittedly using illicit drugs.
"You have violated. This court cannot overlook that," Circuit Judge Ben Hooper said during the probation violation hearing in Sevier County.
Teaster, a former assistant baseball coach for Pigeon Forge High School, earned five years' probation after he pleaded guilty to reckless vehicular homicide for an August 2008 crash on Kingfisher Avenue in Sevierville. His passenger and fellow coach, Jeremy Chesney, 20, died in the wreck. Both men had blood alcohol levels above the legal limit, according to court records.
Teaster, represented by defense attorney Bryan Delius, had served less than a year of that probation Aug. 27 when police said he drifted into the wrong lane on U.S. Highway 441 in Pigeon Forge and struck a 2002 Pontiac Aztec driven by Tony Lamb, 26, of Waco, Texas. Teaster left the scene before police arrived, records show. Lamb told police he was driving north when Teaster's 1990 Cadillac crossed into the lane and hit the Aztec.
"He passed me and threw his hands up and kept driving," Lamb wrote in a statement to police.
Teaster showed up at police headquarters about an hour after the crash and told officers he'd been tuning his iPod while driving. They cited him with leaving the scene of an accident.
Then in November he was charged with violating the terms of his probation after his probation officer learned he'd been cited for the accident and failed to report it, according to court records.
The leaving the scene of the accident charge was later dismissed after another judge ruled Teaster was not properly Mirandized before he admitted his involvement in the crash, special prosecutor Steve Garrett said.
According to testimony while on probation Teaster also acknowledged taking Xanax without a prescription (December 2010) and using marijuana on June 20. An Alcoa Police Department officer also testified that on April 27 he cited Teaster for speeding - 73 mph in a 50 mph zone.
For the first time since the fatal crash, Teaster on Monday spoke to Chesney's parents - John and Lisa Chesney.

I hung a shingle in February 2000, because I saw that individuals charged with criminal offenses were being underserved by the attorneys practicing criminal law. Since February 2000, I have represented more than two thousand criminal clients. I only practice criminal law, but I do everything from violations of probation to Supreme Court appeals. There are few attorneys under the age of sixty that have my level of experience. I have tried more than two hundred major felony jury trials. I have tried more than fifty misdemeanor jury trials. In Philadelphia as a prosecutor, I tried more than two thousand bench trials. I have conducted more than three thousand preliminary hearings and bond hearings. Yet, I still have the energy at forty-five to serve my current clients. There is nothing that will occur in a courtroom that I have not experienced before. When you are looking for an attorney, experience is everything.
