UPDATE: 911 Service Restored in Roane County
Frontier managers say a fiber cable between Elizabeth and Mineral Wells affected service for many customers in Roane County, including the 911 Center. Managers say the issue was not due to cable theft. They’re still trying to figure out why the outage happened.
Emergency officials say when callers would contact the center, pertinent information like their phone number and location would not appear on their computer screens.
Melissa Gilbert, director of Roane County’s 911 Center, says she decided to have calls routed to Jackson County.
"It will delay the response time just a little bit because they have to hang up with the 911 caller. Then, they have to call us and relay the information to us. So, it's going to take a couple more minutes," Gilbert says.
But during that process, officials discovered that people in the Gandeeville and Walton areas could not use their phone lines to contact anyone outside those areas. Officials also say people could not call into those areas either.
Emergency officials set up a temporary 911 center at the Walton Volunteer Fire Department.
Several businesses were affected, as well. At the Walton Thriftway, customers couldn't call in orders or use credit cards because the machines couldn't dial out.
By noon, things were back to normal in the county.
Despite the inconvenience and confusion, there weren't any major emergencies all morning.
Dispatchers were able to use radios for emergency communication.
They also had an Internet connection. So, they used Facebook to keep up to date with each other about the progress on getting service restored.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Dispatchers in Roane County say the 911 system in the county is experiencing troubles. They say Frontier is working on the problem, but in the meantime, 911 calls will be rerouted.
Dispatchers say the problems come following major issues in Elkview. Frontier officials say those problems came after thieves cut phone lines to get to copper.
Roane County dispatchers say no problems were reported in their area until this morning. Now, the county has no 911 service and dispatchers say cell phone service, including AT&T and Verizon, is out, as well.
911 calls in Roane County are now being rerouted to Jackson County, West Virginia. However, folks living in the 577 area of Walton will have their calls to 911 rerouted to the Walton Fire Department.

Frontier Communications DSL and dialup customers in the Walnut Hill, Bratt, Molino and Atmore areas were without internet service for about five hours today.
The outage appeared to be a problem with one of the companies that provides the internet connection to Frontier, not an actual Frontier problem, according to Stephanie Schifano, a corporate spokesperson for Frontier.
The outage began about 2 p.m. and was restored by just after 7 p.m.
Hahaha @Terry, discount for outage? Seriously? I worked in tech for several major ISP’s since 1995, you know what I’d tell a customer who wanted credit for a 5 hour outage? Let’s do the math $50.00 a month, roughly $1.66 per day, $0.06 cents per hour. Here’s your $.30 cent credit for the outage. Sorry It’s just business. why would a company worry about making you a happy customer when they’re the only thing going for broadband internet service for most of the area. Sure switch to Brighthouse, or use slow wifi service through cellular towers. You can’t complain to the Public Service Commission about your netz being down, they’ll laugh at you. The water company does what they want, the power company does what they want, and the phone company does what they want because they can in NE.
“It would be good if someone like William would do some journalistic research and find out why AT&T chooses to bring 3G to all areas surrounding Atmore but not to Atmore?!?!?!”
Indeed! Sometimes the power of The Fourth Estate can work wonders. I have been told a 3G tower was going in at Jack Springs Road and 65, and at Hwy 4 and 97 but that was last fall and still nothing…..
Not only does Brewton and Bay Minette have 3G, but Flomaton has it as well!!! I have had two AT&T representatives tell me that there are no current plans to bring 3G to the Atmore area.

I agree that there needs to be competition instead of domination. Perhaps if Frontier knew that someone else could take their business, they would provide better service. One of my children also do school with online classes. Yesterday was a HUGE inconvenience. This is becoming a much too frequent problem that I would like to not see.
Can the public do anything to help get another company to come in and provide internet service?
