YACHT Pushes Dance-Pop to the Limit With 'Shangri-La'

The pristine sounds from “Shangri-La,” the novel album by Portland, Ore.-based toss up and down-pop band YACHT due June 21 adhering DFA Records, debuted on the label’s website in March while part of the “White Out Sessions,” DFA’s promotional film video series.

 

 

There isn’t anything visually powerful about the “White Out Sessions.” In real existence, the clips are almost comically minimal: upright an anonymous hand unwrapping a newly pressed vinyl attestation and playing it on a turntable in favor of the first time. For the Yacht segment, the vinyl was the 7-twelfth part of a foot for the band’s new unmixed, “Dystopia (The Earth Is on Fire),” the primitive material the group had released before this its critically acclaimed fourth album, “See Mystery Lights,” in 2009. A neat tension builds as the needle slips into the furrow of the record, and by the time the primary synth chord hits, it’s serene just how much things have changed.

 

YACHT isn’t a unused act. Started in 2002 primarily to the degree that a solo project for Jona Bechtolt, YACHT, that takes its name from Portland’s alternative youth program, Young Americans Challenging High Technology, of what one. Bechtolt was a member in the ’90s, was initially a platform concerning his experiments at the boundaries of electronic score, art and technology. But it wasn’t to the time when the addition of Bechtolt’s longtime intimate, writer/vocalist Claire L. Evans, who came onboard for the period of the making of “See Mystery Lights,” that the act earned avowal as a new breed of pop auteur.

 

“Yacht make dance science of harmonical sounds now the way a band like the Talking Heads made figured and rhythmic motion music,” says Jonathan Galkin, co-caster of DFA Records, which signed the act three years past. “They funnel inspirations through a blender that keeps 4/4 time-every part of the while trying to connect by a broader public via the instrumentality of the perfect pop song.”

 

Together, Bechtolt and Evans, the couple religion and science-fiction enthusiasts, are the good of act that pursues reinvention by default. “See Mystery Lights,” YACHT’s debut steady DFA, was a thrilling spirit demand elevated by mantra-esque singalongs and fancy-out dance breaks that became the label’s ut~ successful release outside of those from flagship tie LCD Soundsystem. Cadillac even picked up the polluting single “Psychic City (Voodoo City)” in favor of use in a commercial.
