Journey to Nashville begins at the Country Showdown

The North Platte Telegraph

Reggie Shaw is one step closer to once again performing at the Grand Ole Opry. He is one of twelve local singers who competed Wednesday night with the hope of making it to Nashville, Tenn. Big Names like Garth Brooks, Sara Evans, and LeAnn Rimes got their start at local Showdown competitions. The local "Country Showdown" was hosted by KX104 at the Wild West Arena.

Nicole Hardy, business manager at KX104, said performers pay a $20 entrance fee to be in the competition. There is no age limit, but performers need to play country music. Hardy said performers get bonus points in the judging for creativity.

"This contest really encourages people to write their own music," Hardy said. Performers are judged in areas of stage presence, vocal ability, and marketability by local country music fans, and musicians. One winner from the group moves to the state round. The finals are held in the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

Shaw was one of five finalists to make it to Nashville last year. He has been singing for 21 years.

"It is a major rush," Shaw said. "It gets me through life."

Shaw said he likes being able to tell a story with songs. He is drawn to country music because he said it is real. Shaw performed two songs in the competition, one was a cover and one was a song he wrote about his grandfather. The song was written after his grandfather died last year. Like Shaw, his grandfather dreamed of playing on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. Shaw said the competition has been great.

"I got to sing on the Grand Ole Opry stage," Shaw said.

Local musician Matthew Martinez performs under the name Rascal. This is his fourth year in the competition.

"I'm here for the fun," Martinez said.
