Police Report: Aug. 9

1About $900 was taken from Indian Groceries and Spices, 10633 W. North Ave., between 10:15 p.m. Aug. 4 and 9:15 a.m. Aug. 5.

2Two bicycles were taken from an open garage in the 1700 block of North 60th Street prior to midnight Aug. 5. Loss is estimated at $150. There were five bicycles in the garage; none were locked.

3Jewelry, a desktop computer, a printer, a television and a VCR were taken from a home in the 4000 block of North 93rd Street between 10:30 a.m. Aug. 7 and 1:30 p.m. Aug. 8. Loss is estimated at $2,450.

4A burglary was attempted at a home in the 6400 block of West North Avenue prior to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 7. The residence was locked, but when the victims came home their back door was open and a pane of glass in the door was broken. Nothing was taken.

5About $350 was taken from Hui's restaurant, 8818 W. North Ave., between 11 p.m. Aug. 7 and 9:50 a.m. Aug. 8.

6A burglary was attempted at Speedway, 6804 W. North Ave., about 2:30 a.m. Aug. 8. The burglar alarm was set off and a small point of impact on the door caused the glass to break in a spiderweb pattern. Surveillance video footage shows a vehicle pull up and a man getting out of the car. He did not enter the store. Damage is estimated at $300.

7A man and a woman loaded a cart full of diapers and tried to leave Walgreens, 10800 W. Capitol Drive, at 12:33 a.m. Aug. 2. An employee stopped them and asked to see a receipt for the items. The man said he had already paid for the items and they left the store with the items. Two employees followed them out to recover the cart, and the woman gave one employee "the finger" before the pair fled. The value of the recovered items is $104.

8An Android cell phone was taken from a Verizon Wireless kiosk at Mayfair Mall, 2500 N. Mayfair Road, at 2:45 p.m. Aug. 2. While helping a customer, the sales associate at the kiosk placed his mobile work phone on the counter next to the display case. When he finished helping the customer, he noticed his phone was missing. He suspects the two men he had helped previously took it. The value of the phone is $459.

9A vehicle in a fenced-in driveway was taken in the 2300 block of North 61st Street at 8:17 a.m. Aug. 3. The car is valued at $12,000. A camera valued at $200 was inside the car. The key to the car may have been left in the vehicle.

10A man and a woman tried to steal allergy medication from Metcalfe's Sentry, 6700 W. State St., at 9:45 a.m. Aug. 4. A loss prevention employee and the store manager confronted them outside the store. The woman handed over her purse, in which she had put the medicine; she and the man then left the property. The value of the medicine recovered was $240.

I’m not complaining too badly, since I paid about $15 for it, but the description does say “binaural.” I guess I should literally translate that to “two ears” because the headphones do fit on both ears, but there is only one channel of sound. Understand that before you buy.

That said, they do fit my ears well and the volume is adequate for me (and I have about 40% hearing loss).

On a side note, on the unit I bought, the off switch on the headphones doesn’t work, so I’m returning them, but for a mono sound and a cheap wireless headphone, it’s not too bad.

This is the third pair of inexpensive wireless headphones I have tried, and this is the one I am keeping! The others had a lot of static, background noise — these are much quieter. These are also very comfortable to wear for long periods. I am very pleased with them. My one CON is that I broke the battery compartment door on the transmitter when installing the battery. Not a big deal since the transmitter just sits on my desk, but treat it gently.
