Ore. regulators toughen water toxics standards

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon regulators have adopted tougher standards for toxic water pollutants. The standards are intended to protect tribal members and others who eat lots of fish — on the order of two dozen meals a month.

Tribes have pressed since the 1990s for more control over such pollutants as mercury, pesticides and dioxins in the water — arguing that they shouldn't be harmed for following their cultural and religious practices in fish consumption.

Higher standards met resistance from paper mills, farmers and loggers, and managers of municipal sewage treatment plants.

The Oregonian reports the Environmental Quality Commission approved new standards Thursday in a Pendleton meeting.

The key to the new standards is that they're based on a daily consumption rate that officials say works out to 23 portions a month of about 8 ounces each.

Oregon Troops Welcomed Home In Pendleton · OPB News

Seventy members of the Oregon National Guard took part in a demobilization ceremony in Pendleton Wednesday.

Bravo Company of the 168th Aviation Wing served 10 months in Afghanistan.

They used Chinook helicopters -- the kind used to fight wildfires here in Oregon -- to transport supplies and personnel. Captain Stephen Bomar says he's thankful the unit did not have any deaths, but some soldiers were hurt.

"Several were injured in rocket attacks. It was a dangerous time over there. Those individuals will be going through hospital procedures and so we ask everybody to keep them in their prayers as they readjust back home and get back with their families," Bomar said.

Bomar says about 175 military police from Salem will be sent to Afghanistan in the fall.

At the same time, another unit of about 600 National Guard troops will return from Iraq.
