Rosario starting over

TROY -- When Ebert Rosario got called into Lancaster manager Tom Lawless ' office last summer, you couldn't blame him for thinking his baseball career was over.

And it was. As a third baseman, anyway.

Strange emotions swirl when you're told as a 23-year-old in high Class A, you're not going to make it as a hitter, kid ... but we think you got a shot as a pitcher.

"It was hard. I was successful as a hitter. I just had two bad months in my career in five years," said Rosario, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound right-hander out of La Romana, Dominican Republic. "I felt I failed as a hitter: 'Oh, my God, I have to start again.' It was like everything was new."

He has only a few at-bats here in 2008, and only one hit in 17 plate appearances. But he hit down in Greenville, and then up in Lexington. But Rosario struggled at the start of the 2010 season, started to hit, but then was told to shut it down. You're a pitcher now.

First he had to, you know, learn how to pitch.

Rosario played all over the diamond growing up (including shortstop, which must be some sort of law in the Dominican Republic given how many major-leaguers it produces at the position), but that was so long ago. Different game.

"I got sent back to (the Gulf Coast League )," he said. "I started practicing in the bullpen: Mechanics, arm motion, all that stuff. This year I got to spring training, basically the same, working on my stuff and the transition."

There's a reason the Astros brass decided to try Rosario on the mound: Live arms, even untrained ones, are a valuable commodity.

"Once I pitched the first time and hit 95 (mph), I knew I had a future," he said. "I just have to keep working on it."

Rosario said he has a fastball, slider, sinker and changeup. He said he's hit the high 90s on the gun. His greatest concern in the transition is maintaining tempo.

"The biggest thing is stay calm," he said. "Sometimes I try to rush. I just have to stay calm and take my time. Mechanics is my biggest issue."

Pitching coach Gary Ruby agreed the toughest part of converting to a pitcher is learning the routine, the repetition.

"He is pretty solid mechanically, but like (converted pitcher Jorge) De Leon last year, it's a day-to-day basis," Ruby said. "But he is blessed with a great arm. He's got a 93 mph fastball and a slider, and he throws strikes. We are pretty encouraged by it.
