National Trust and Age UK to make getting fitter fun | GoUK.com

The National Trust has joined forces with Age UK Cheshire East to promote a walking campaign at Lyme Park.

A series of 6 walks has been planned between May and August.  Backed by the national Walking for Health Campaign, the walks aim to encourage more people over 50 to walk their way to a healthier life. The walks also form part of the National Trust’s five year outdoor campaign which aims to encourage people of all ages to get out and about in the natural environment on their doorstep.

Head Warden at Lyme Park, Emily Ball says:

“A bracing walk in the countryside not only makes us feel good, it does us a power of good too – and that’s official! No matter what our age or fitness level, walking lifts our spirits, burns calories and can make you feel fantastic.  Other benefits include reduction of stress, increase in energy, reduced blood pressure, and improved heart rate and sleep patterns”

“What makes these excursions at Lyme Park really special is that each one will be led by one of our regular volunteers, who have been specially trained to become walks leaders and have a wealth of expert knowledge about all aspects of the park”.

“I’m delighted with the enthusiastic response from the volunteers – it’s the first time Lyme has been involved with the Walking for Health programme. We were quite overwhelmed by how many people wanted to be involved. We have got a fantastic network of volunteers and 16 have been trained to become walks leaders”.

People who come along to the walks will have the added bonus of being with a walk leader who has got in-depth knowledge about a particular aspect of the park, whether it’s the wildlife, gardening or history. Walks will vary from gentle strolls through the gardens to more demanding two-hour rambles – all under expert guidance so novices can feel perfectly safe.

David Lloyd, a volunteer walks’ leader, has been showing visitors around the park grounds at Lyme for 13 years. David, whose wife Margaret is a house steward at Lyme, has built up a wealth of knowledge about the park that he can’t wait to share with walkers.

“There’s been great interest in the walks programme” says David. “I enjoy walking in the park and feel it’s a great idea to encourage people to get out and be active in the fresh air. I love doing it and it’s a great opportunity to give something back to the walking community”.
