Three new principals named for BISD schools

Three BISD schools have new principals, two following unanimous action Tuesday night by the Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees, the third as an administrative reassignment.

Christian Caldarera, a specialist in BISD’s Curriculum Department, was named principal of Keller Elementary School. He has 17 years of experience in BISD, three as principal of Faulk Middle School and five as an assistant principal at Hanna High School and Vela Middle School.

Keller Elementary opened in 2009 and is part of the Veterans Memorial cluster supervised by Jay Harris. Caldarera replaces Carlos Garza, who is retiring.

At Peña Elementary, Yolanda Tubeville is replacing Ernestina Treviño, who also is retiring. Tubeville has 17 years of experience as an educator, all with BISD. For the past five years she has been assistant principal at Benavides Elementary. For four years prior to that, she was a facilitator at Garden Park Elementary.

Peña Elementary also opened in 2009. It is part of the Rivera cluster supervised by Rita Hernandez.

Meanwhile, Carla Pereira, the principal at Putegnat Elementary for the past two years, was reassigned as principal at Faulk, where Mario Rodriguez is retiring. Pereira has 17 years experience as an educator, 12 with BISD. Prior to leading Putegnat, she was an assistant principal for seven years at Porter High School.

No replacement was named for Pereira at Putegnat. Faulk and Putegnat are part of the Porter cluster of schools supervised by Mary Jo Monfils.

Interim Superintendent Carl Montoya, who reassigned Pereira and recommended the two appointments, said he has great confi-dence in the new principals.

“I know their accomplishments and abilities and I am convinced that they will provide exceptional leadership in their new as-signments,” he said.

In other action Tuesday night, trustees heard presentations from three firms seeking to be hired for a forensic audit of BISD fi-nancial and business operations. They also reopened a program that offers cash in exchange for early notification of resignation and is expected to save the district millions of dollars in payroll costs.

BISD issued a request for qualifications for forensic auditing services following action at the May 17 meeting. Trustee Luci B. Longoria reiterated Tuesday that such an audit is needed because there have been “numerous discrepancies and inconsistencies” in financial statements given to the board and concerning BISD’s bonded indebtedness.
