Man on trial over €1.2m jewellery robbery
A 24-year-old Dublin man has gone on trial accused of stealing €1.2m worth of diamonds and designer jewellery from a store in Dublin.
Ian Maloney is accused of carrying out the heist at the Paul Sheeran store in the Dundrum Town Centre on the 3 September 2008.
He is accused of robbery and the possession of a double-barrelled sawn-off shotgun.
At the opening of the trial, prosecution counsel James Dwyer told the jury that they will hear evidence of how two men dressed as builders, entered the Paul Sheeran store between 8pm and 8.30pm on the night of the raid and proceeded to steal seven watches and 145 rings.
The jury was told that witnesses in the store at the time of the robbery had picked out Ian Maloney in a line up, as the one who was holding the gun and who had threatened staff.
Mr Dwyer said they would also hear evidence of how a red Subaru car used in the raid was later found abandoned with the shotgun inside.
Mr Maloney, from Cashel Road in Crumlin has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The trial is expected to last two weeks.
