Possible to Breathe in Space? Oxygen Molecules Found

The observatory's high-powered telescope pinpointed the molecules in the Orion nebula, roughly 1500 light years away from the Earth's surface. Though single atoms of oxygen are common in space, the find is unique because it is molecular oxygen.

The James Webb Space Telescope is vital for science and should not face the budget axe. By LAWRENCE M. KRAUSS Almost 20 years ago, Congress cancelled what was then the most ambitious scientific project ever launched: the Superconducting Super Collider.

That gorgeous shot is from the European Southern Observatory's Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA), a 4.1 meter 'scope sitting in northern Chile that sports a 67 megapixel camera. It's optimized to view the skies in infrared

If I had a Telescope this Summer...

But even if you can't see the galaxy where you are, there are some great sights to be had with even a small amateur telescope. In fact, just by navigating around the Summer Triangle, you can take a great tour of what's up there in the sky!

Not only is it a great introductory guide to the hobby, but has nice chapter on how to purchase a telescope.

Just to let you know, that stars in nearly any telescope will always be pinpoints. Planets like Jupiter or Saturn, will show a disk and the larger moons.

For planets, you can do a lot with around 6" reflector. An 8" reflector will really start showing off the Universe.

But for you, begin with 7×50 binoculars and a planisphere or chart. This will help you learn the sky and get a feel for what stuff looks like.

Decent binoculars - http://www.telescope.com/Accessories/Books/Orion-Beginning-Stargazers-Toolkit/pc/-1/c/3/sc/42/p/20034.uts

If you can, see if there is a local astronomy club in your area. A decent club will help you learn the ropes and even provide a loaner telescope that you can borrow for a period of time.

A good resource for finding prices on equipment is this place - http://www.skywatchertelescope.net/swtinc/product.php?class1=1&class2=106

Buy from a store which specializes in telescopes and astronomy, either locally or online; don’t buy from department stores, discount stores or eBay as mostly what they sell is junk. Find your local astronomy club and try out different telescopes at one of their star parties: http://www.skyandtelescope.com/community/organizations

I strongly recommend that beginners steer clear of astrophotography until they have learned their way around the sky. Astrophotography is by far the most expensive and difficult area of amateur astronomy.

Many people who buy telescopes have no idea how to find interesting things to observe. A good introduction to finding things is NightWatch by Terence Dickinson (Firefly). A more advanced book is Star Watch by Phil Harrington (Wiley).
