MOM's Back-to-School Guide

It's the planner in me that feels the need to do this feature. There's certainly plenty of summer left to continue having fun so lets make the most of it! At the same time, there are simple things we can do so the transition back to school won’t be such a shocker. 

Staying up late, ice cream, goodies, friends, fun, games, movies, unlimited paradise! This is what summer's about! Come August, a slow transition from all of these habits to a more structured predictable schedule will help when school starts.

Family Talk A family talk may be necessary to gear up for the upcoming school year. A new school, new class, new friends are all very intimidating and kids develop anxiety leading up to the transition. Open up to your kids and ask them how they are feeling about this school year and if they have any feelings of excitement or concern about the transition. Be sure to communicate what your child’s schedule will be like and what time school begins and ends each day. It’s important to focus on the positive aspects of school, that it can be fun and a way to make new friends. However, be sure to reassure them that you will be there if a problem were to arise.

Schedule A routine is the first thing to change over the summer. Many kids do go to camp and still do need a routine in order to get out of the house, however, a camp routine is different from a school routine. Simple changes to begin this month include earlier bedtimes and wake times. Everyone should have at least 8-11 hours of sleep each night. Implement the daily wake-up routine of brushed teeth, dressing, maybe eat breakfast before the TV goes on in the morning. In the evening commit to a 1/2 hour of reading and pick out clothes for the next day before bed each night.

Purchase School Supplies Obtain the supply list from your classroom teacher and stock up on what everyone needs. Involve the kids and give them a sense of control by having them pick their new notebooks, clothes or backpack for school. Many kids have after school activities that they also need supplies for. Make a list and be sure this year your are overly prepared for school and activities. To make the first week even easier plan out the outfits the kids will wear during that first week of school and have them help with the shopping and planning!

Look-See To ease the stress for kids it can really help if you visit the new school and become acquainted with it beforehand. Take your kids to the playground at the school and walk the grounds. Be sure to visit the teachers websites, and meet the teacher, if possible, so the kids can get used to their new teachers name and what he/she looks like. Often teachers have a personal note posted on their school website so read it to your kids so they can get a sense of who he/she is.
