Indonesia Needs Boaz Solossa — and Vice Versa

During a team announcement last week, it was hardly a surprise when national team manager Ferry Kodrat mentioned Boaz as one of three players who hadn’t come to Jakarta to train with the entire squad – the other two were Oktovianus Maniani and Ricardo Salampessy. Many feared Boaz would be a no-show once again. So when the Persipura striker finally showed up in the capital yesterday, many sighed in relief. The prodigal son had returned.
Boaz received a lot of criticisms for his outlandish rejections to play for the Red and Whites, with many deeming him unpatriotic. He was booted by Alfred Riedl from the AFF Cup squad last year because he failed to report to training, even though he had been given a five-day grace period. Boaz said it was because he had to take care of his sick wife and children, but the general opinion was that he didn’t have any intention of playing for Indonesia at all because of his bitter past experiences with the national side.
The Sorong-born striker suffered two career-threatening injuries while playing for Indonesia. The first time was when he was tackled by Singapore’s Baihakki Khaizan in the AFF Cup finals in 2004 — a tournament where Boaz cemented his name as the nation’s most prolific attacker. Boaz suffered a fibula fracture and missed the second leg as Indonesia was defeated.
Boaz was expected to shine in the 2007 Asian Cup, which was co-hosted by Indonesia and 3 other Southeast Asian countries. The expectation was killed even before the tournament started as he had to be carried off on the stretcher with a broken leg during a friendly match against Hong Kong. We can only wonder how far Indonesia would have gone in that tournament had Boaz not been injured.
I failed to count how many times I heard “If only Boaz was here” every time Indonesia looked dire on the pitch. Boaz offers speed and agility, he was highly dangerous when hitting a fastbreak and his footballing brain makes it possible to create tricky link-up plays with other players. He’s an inspiration and expected to carry Indonesia like he’s been carrying Persipura.
As much as we need Boaz to boost Merah Putih, he also needs the national team to raise his profile and redeem his rebellious image. He’s not really a renegade — he was just confused and bitter about being mistreated. Even when he turned his back on the national team, he always expressed his intention to have the Garuda badge adorn his chest once again.

Fracture of the legs usually incorporate lower leg fractures.
