On Monday, the Bay County Animal Control facility was nearly full. The staff can only keep dogs for seven days before they're euthanized. The time period is even shorter for cats. Currently in the facility there are around 100 dogs and 130 cats. Out of that 100 around 46% dogs will be adopted and only 15% of the 130 cats. The rest will be euthanized
Last year the facility took-in more than 4,300 cats and 4,100 dogs. Only 280 cats were adopted and 930 dogs found homes. The rest were put to sleep. Animal Control Director Bill Olasin says those numbers are large for a county of this size.
"The bottom line is because we have so many animals come in here we actually have to euthanize between 5,000 to 6,000 animals a year and that's a shame," said Olasin.
He believes the new Animal Control Advisory Committee's biggest priorities will be lowering that rate and educating the public on spaying and neutering.
"One we will be able to utilize taxpayers dollars much better in the performance of our program as well as provide a nice education program for the citizens of Bay County on the important things of animal ownership," said Olasin.
The advisory committee meeting will be rescheduled. The group plans to meet quarterly.
