CHILLICOTHE -- The sons of a local youth baseball league's former treasurer have been indicted on forgery and theft charges.
On May 11, the Chillicothe Police Department took a report from the Pony League Baseball's new treasurer, Doyle Callihan, regarding suspicions that some funds had been taken from the league's account.
Callihan told police he had received former treasurer Roy Lowery's checkbook and began looking it over because of a thought that funds were being taken for "some time," according to the police report.
He allegedly discovered three checks were missing and two had been cashed for a total of $300. The cashed checks had been made out to Braun Lowery, Roy's son, but the signature did not match the one on record for Roy, according to the report.
While the report indicated Callihan thought there might have been thefts of funds as far back as 2008, the June 10 secret indictments handed down against Braun R. Lowery and his brother, Patrick W. Lowery, both of 2428 Sullivan Road, reference only two checks uttered in May.
The indictments alleged Patrick Lowery took blank checks, then helped his brother, Braun, forge them -- one for $100 and another for $200.
Patrick Lowery was indicted on theft and complicity to forgery charges, both fifth-degree felonies. Braun Lowery was indicted on two counts of forgery, both fifth-degree felonies.
A fifth-degree felony carries a potential prison sentence of six months to a year and up to a $2,500 fine.

The Scout noted that these youth baseball accomplishments were amazing for a small city, especially considering the short time that these programs had been in existence (Little League, three years; Pony League, two years; and Colt League, one year).

Lions, Colts claim Pony League Titles | Tacoma Weekly
Lots of offense in season-ending tournament
Offensive outbursts were a big theme during the Tacoma Pony Baseball League’s season-ending tournament last week, capping the league’s inaugural season. The Lions 98 team emerged with the Bronco division’s championship with a hard-fought 10-7 victory over the Dirt Dogs on June 19.
The Dirt Dogs’ Phillip Bolt hit a two-run homer in the first that put the team up 3-0, but the Lions 98 came back with a three-run second, including Kyle Baker’s two-run double to take a 4-3 lead. After several lead changes, the Lions 98 finally took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, as Cooper Pethick’s two-run single helped give them the 10-7 lead.
Pethick and Luke Norvell were 3-for-3, and Billy Begs was 2-for-3 with a stolen base for the Lions 98. Pethick came on to pitch a scoreless seventh inning, and the Lions 98 completed a perfect run through the tournament, winning all four of their games and averaging 13 runs per contest.
“We’re very good offensively and we also pitch well,” Lions 98 manager Harry Beggs said. “I want the kids to be aggressive. I don’t want them looking for walks.”
The Lions 98 had won their semifinals matchup 11-4 earlier in the day against the same Dirt Dog squad, with a seven-run third inning providing the difference.
Norvell hit a two-run home run in the second inning for a 2-0 early lead. Then in the third, Keegan Boyd singled to score Andrew Schomogyi, and Ben Jensen followed with a two-run single for a 5-0 lead. Alex Davis followed with a two-run double, and Norvell added an RBI as part of another huge offensive game, with three hits and four RBIs.
“He would be the star of our game today, that’s for sure,” said Beggs of Norvell, who also pitched three shutout innings.
The Dirt Dogs got on the board in the third on a single by Bolt to score Ryan Naylor, who had walked. Bolt and Naylor added runs in the sixth, scoring on a single by Thomas Connelly to cut the deficit to 9-3. Davis Behnke hit a massive home run in the seventh for the Dirt Dogs, but it was not enough as the Lions 98 emerged with the 11-4 win.
The Dirt Dogs had made it to the finals after a 10-4 win over the Barristers, a gritty team comprised of mainly 11-year old players. Behnke hit his second home run of the day, and Zach Ecklund also homered to lead the Dirt Dogs’ offensive attack.
The Barristers received some solid pitching early from Jamar Robinson, who struck out four Dirt Dogs in the fourth inning, with two batters reaching base after the ball got away from the catcher. Behnke was equally solid on the mound for the Dirt Dogs, striking out six Barristers batters in the first three innings.
Guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there. 'Til then, I've got 3 days of Pony League baseball to cover.
