Mystery shoppers to examine primary care availability
With primary care doctors still in short supply, the Obama administration has decided to use "mystery shoppers" to pose as patients and see how difficult it is to access care. The secret shopper survey will also try to determine whether doctors give different answers to patients depending on their insurance type.
"Access to primary care is a priority for the administration," Christian J. Stenrud, a U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) spokesman, told the New York . "This study is an effort to better understand the problem and make sure we are doing everything we can to support primary care physicians, especially in communities where the need is greatest."
Over the next few months, federal contractors will call doctors' offices---465 each in Florida, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia--to try scheduling an appointment for a potentially serious health condition, as well as for routine care.
Each office will receive two calls: one from a patient who claims to have private insurance, and another from a patient who allegedly has public insurance. Eleven percent will receive a third call, admittedly from an HHS representative. Federal officials said the initial survey will cost $347,370, the Times Emergencies---forget about it--go to the ER !.. thats a shocker. SOLUTION: Increase the number of FP and Internal medicine residency slots. Academia does not have money to support new residents...How about unpaid residencies ? 6000 4th yr medical students did NOT get matched in 2011!.So President we already have few standing in unemployment lines looking for residency.Somebody send this to the HHS head .

Mystery Books that Take Place in New Mexico — The Cozy Mystery ...
Nothing to do with New Mexico, but ……I just finished reading Town in a Blueberry Jam & Town In A Lobster Stew by B.B. Haywood. Liked them. This could be a fun series. It will be interesting to see how the character evolves. Did you know that BB Haywood is actually two people, a husband and wife? Not a cozy, but the WWI books by Charles Todd: mother and son and in two different states.

The Kevin Kerney series by Michael McGarrity is another New Mexico series that I really enjoyed. It isn’t a cozy, but the author develops the characters and makes you care about them through the series. I don’t know if he is working on another book. I have read everything he has written thus far. If anyone knows, would you let me know?
I really enjoy this website and find the month-by-month publishing list invaluable.
I’m a huge Tony Hillerman fan and not only read each of his mysteries more than once, but also read all of his nonfiction books as well. Also, there is a three movie DVD set that I really like as well.
I lived in Arizona for a year (2006) and visited the four-corners area, and traveled all around the area where the Hillerman books were based. Spent several weeks in the area.
Also, to respond to an earlier comment, just finished the latest J.A. Jance – Fatal Error – with Ali Reynolds. Have you done an Arizona list yet? (This isn’t a cozy, though, is it?).
Love how you collect these state-related mysteries.
