European Grand Prix: Vettel coasts to his sixth win of 2011

The German showed no sign of repeating the error which cost him victory in Canada two weeks ago as he produced a faultless display to extend his lead in the drivers’ championship to a massive 77 points.

Vettel described the win as “the best one so far” over the team radio as he crossed the line, but the world champion seemed to be one of the only few to enjoy it.

After an enthralling Canadian Grand Prix two weeks ago in Montréal this race was a drab affair, typical of the European Grand Prix since the Valencia Street Circuit was introduced to the calendar in 2008.

“Maybe from the outside, I don’t know how much was happening in the grand prix, it looked like a boring race but I enjoyed it so much,” said Vettel. “For some reason I enjoy this track.

“Even though we come here every year and say ‘hmm, this might be tricky because this track is not made for us 100 per cent with no real fast corners’, we still managed to put everything together and were faultless this weekend.”

Alonso, who started fourth on the grid, was second 10.8 seconds behind Vettel to take second for Ferrari and give the Spanish crowd something to cheer about. Mark Webber took third, almost half a minute behind, despite starting second on the grid, in the sister Red Bull.

“Finally with a normal race we get this chance to be on the podium to celebrate this fantastic weekend,” said Alonso. “I think this is the best result we can achieve now for them [Spanish fans].”

Alonso managed to take second on lap 21 as he made good use of the DRS to get past Webber. But the Spaniard failed to make up time on Vettel and lost the place in the second round of stops.

Ferrari were able to come back and managed to reclaim second in the third round of stops, with Alonso had enough to ultimately hold onto second place. Vettel, however, was never troubled.

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton managed to have a trouble-free race on his way to fourth place. He lost out to the two Ferraris on the opening corner, while Alonso set about getting past team-mate Felipe Massa before hunting down the Red Bulls.

Hamilton later gained a place from Massa, who eventually finished fifth ahead of Jenson Button in the sister McLaren.

But Hamilton’s inability to look after his tyres prevented him from being able to really make any inroads on the leaders.
